  • First Steps – Life on Earth

Scientists find a missing link between fish and land animals

Gosh, another good day in paleontology.

375-380 million years ago, this fellow took the first steps on land…

Named Tiktaalik Roseae after an Inuit word for “large freshwater fish” he won’t have too many children named after him, but he sure did a favor for all of us land-dwellers.

Bones from huge dinosaur found on Chathams

This article from the New Zealand Herald talks about new land-based dinosaur discoveries on Chathams, an island off New Zealand.

Generally, New Zealand was not thought to have land-dwelling dinosaurs until these discoveries.

  • Rainbow’s End, Mesa and Scottsdale

I happened to be a Kiwanis Park in Tempe last Tuesday when a small rainstorm was blowing by.

The conditions and the sunlight were just right to form this absolutely perfect rainbow, which ran complete from ground to ground.

Sadly, all I had was my cameraphone, which couldn’t even get a shot of the full arc.

    It was still pretty, anyway.

  • Looking Forward

Today was a red letter day for James.

He’s just too tall to sit in a rear-facing car seat anymore. Today we turned him around and let him have first ride round town looking at what’s coming rather than what’s going.

    He seemed rather nonplussed.

  • Moments When It Pays NOT To Have A Camera

We were scrounging for cheap art supplies at Dollar Tree today.

Irene and the kids were in the art junk section, and I was roaming the store in hopes of finding something interesting.

The was an aging, african-american woman wandering the halls, looking around rather furtively, but, as Dollar Tree is the sort of place that really brings out the highest social strata, I didn’t give it a second thought, until, a few minutes later, near the back of the store, I came around a corner, and there, in the aisle stood the woman.

Correction, there squatted the woman. Her pants were down around her knees and she was urinating all over the floor and a display of holiday wrapping paper.

Was she pissed off (no pun intended) at Dollar Tree, or just insane? I hope to never find out.
