Five and Ten

Doctor Who => BBC – Doctor Who – News – Who Needs Another Doctor?

avid Tennant’s Tenth Doctor is set to meet Peter Davison’s Fifth Doctor in a special scene commissioned for BBC One’s Children in Need.

The scene, entitled Time Crash, was written by award winning Doctor Who writer Steven Moffatt, and will transmit as part of the Children in Need fundraising evening on Friday 16 November 2007.

Hmmmm, interesting that it was written by Steven Moffatt instead of RTD. Perhaps they really are grooming a new producer after all.

  1. In my opinion, The Three Doctors sucked, The Five Doctors sucked, The Two Doctors sucked and Sirens of Time sucked. Multi Doctor stories suck.

On the other hand, if anyone can do it, that would be Steven Moffatt.

I hope that Five isn’t aware of Ten (I hate paradoxes) and there’s no getting round the fact that Davison looks unmistakably older, plumper and thinner of hair than when he regenerated, and that will bug me. They could’ve done Infinite Quest style animation – I like five in the audios (it’s easier to imagine his voice younger than his whole appearance).

And a most interesting point – more so than where this will fit in five’s timeline – where will this fit in Ten’s timeline? Given that VotD will follow directly from LoTTL, will this be the first out of sequence televised episode?

  3. Corset, wig a little digital magic… he can be 700 again in no time.

I’ll take a stab at it… perhaps Five is on the Titanic, and that’s the time anomaly that caused it to smash into the TARDIS, and there’ll be a short vignette where they meet, resolve a portion of the anomaly, and then Five departs, leaving Ten to resolve whatever else is wrong on the Titanic.

  5. Clearly you were thinking along the right lines! Although I’m not sure if they quite got away with rewriting the end of LoTTL… Still, it gives us the option of simply ignoring it (since technically it occurs during LoTTL but is not referenced in that episode).

  7. I was impressed that they switched to Peter Davison era music during the show. Subtle, but appreciated. (Even if I didn’t care much for the music from that era.)

  9. Didn’t spot that! Nice touch. I have to admit (despite not allowing myself to have any expectations) that I was hoping, just a little bit, to see the old TARDIS set although that would obviously have been hugely more expensive than a short skit could have justified.

I suppose it was well done, for what it was, a quick skit in the tradition of Dimensions in Time. It clearly wasn’t taken as seriously as the previous CiN special (was there only one? what happened last year?) but it did its job as a crowd pleaser. And despite being somewhat self-referential, the writing was very clever (though I still hate paradoxes).
