  • MacMedia

    MacMedia & the iPod Store

Wednesday night at Chick-Fil-A at 83rd & Bell is free kids meal night, so we bundled the kids in the car and headed out to the western Egyptian side of town to feed the kids cheap.

After dinner, Irene took the kids into the playground, while I walked around the shopping complex. I’ve been in this area a thousand times and never realized there was a Macintosh store called MacMedia right there. It was small, but well-stocked, and seemed to have knowledgeable staff.

I actually live much, much closer to an Apple store (5 miles versus 18 miles – I love Google Earth) but it is nice to have alternatives.

They told me they’d been there five years and that the iPod Store was only nine months old.

  • Rats!

Old news by now, but I just found out about it.

This is a heck of a nice piece of video. I can’t help thinking about that PETA bumper sticker I saw recently that said “Rats were people, too.”

  • Taipei Lantern Festival goes Gundam!

    gundam-lantern-01

Engadget => Gundam Lantern, 1:1 scale, lights up Taiwan lantern festival

I love the lantern festival in Taiwan and here’s just one reason why… these lanterns are incredible! I’ve argued in the past that, here in the US, local groups should give up the (mostly lame) Lunar New Year celebration and move right to the Lantern Festival. It’s far more distinctive and more of a festive time. (The actual Lunar New Year is a time to spend at home with family.) The Lantern Festival, which comes at the end of the New Year celebration is when everyone gets out on the streets.

As part of a celebration for the Lantern Festival, a Chinese festival celebrated on the fifteenth day of the first month in the lunar year, the Taiwanese district of Jiayi put up a 1:1 scale model of the original Gundam in lantern form. Traditionally, an animal lantern is used as the central display, but this year a competition was run and as you can see, the RX-78 Gundam lantern won out. Not that the citizens had any choice in the matter: paper sheets have never looked so formidable.

If you can read Chinese, or even if you can’t, here’s another page featuring photos of the construction of the lantern. You’ll have to click on the links to reveal the photos.

Finally, here’s some flickr photos of the Gundam, during daylight.

  • Primeval Once More

Digital Spy => ITV goes for more ‘Benidorm’ and ‘Primeval’

ITV’s series Primeval has been renewed for another series next year.

On the re-commission, executive producer Tim Haines said: “Impossible Pictures is incredibly proud of Primeval, and we’re over the moon that audiences share our passion. ITV’s continued support ensures that Cutter and his team will be back to save the world in the very near future, or past, depending on which side of an anomaly you’re on!”

Nick Elliott, director of network drama for ITV, said: “Primeval has had a wonderful response both from the public and from the press. We’ve opened up a new slot and a new family audience on Saturday night for ITV and the decision to recommission was not a tough one. We’re really looking forward to seeing Cutter and his team in action again.”

    Now… if they’d just hire a scientific advisor…

  • How do you see a lunar eclipse in the daytime?

The EclipseBeing that we were on the wrong side of the planet for today’s lunar eclipse, we ran it in simulation using a nifty little Mac program called OSXPlanet.

This shot is from the sun (with one heck of a telescope) looking at the Earth. This was as the moon was emerging from behind the Earth.

We had the simulation running on three screens. The Moon from the Earth, The Earth from the Moon and the Earth from the Sun. We then took the opportunity to use a flashlight, a globe and ball to explain eclipses to Michelle.

  • Hot pot is big in the Lunar New Year

China View => Huge hot pot in Chengdu

Local residents dine around a huge hot pot in Chengdu, Southwest China’s Sichuan Province, Feb. 16, 2007. The huge hot pot measures 12 meters (39 feet) in diameter, and 4 meters (13 feet) in total height. The maker of the pot has applied for a World Guinness Record as the world’s largest hot pot.

… and I bet it just tasted like those nasty fish balls they put in hot pot all the time.
